BLACK STRAP MOLASSES CANDY



Black strap molasses candy was a special treat  for Civil War soldiers, with the added benefit of being rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and vitamin B6.

 

Sugar was so valuable that it was kept locked in a sugar chest and women wore the key around their neck!

A research grant to study slavery and the Underground Railroad in Kentucky inspired, "A Promise Moon." I alluded to, or drew inspiration from my findings as I wrote my latest novel which is set during the Civil War. RESEARCH FINDINGS
