Quilts (or) How Urban Legends Are Born.

Sorry. Most slaves had one or two pairs of clothes and didn't have the material to make a quilt, let alone communicate coded messages via handmade bed coverings.

Quilting is a billion dollar business, however, and an enterprising merchant capitalized on a fictional children's book to create a supremely profitable urban legend.

A research grant to study slavery and the Underground Railroad in Kentucky inspired, "A Promise Moon." I alluded to, or drew inspiration from my findings as I wrote my latest novel which is set during the Civil War.
